Vladimír Kokolia (born 1956 in Brno) studied at the Academy of Graphic Art in Prague (1976-81). He paints, draws and illustrates books, and he also writes essays on graphic art and art reviews. Since 1986 he has been a member of the ”E“ rock group, where he sings and writes texts.
Kokolia painteed his first important cycle of pictures – called City Mass Transport – while he was still studying at the Academy. With it he introduced himself as an expressive painter with an existentialist starting point. The same attitude is shown by his drawings (most of them done between 1983–85) and graphic works (mainly coloured linocuts, made roughly since 1984). Kokolia's drawings have greatly enriched the tradition of Czech absurd grotesques and become a part of Czech art of the nineteen-eighties that cannot be overlooked.
After a brief pause in the first half of the eighties Kokolia returned in 1985 intensively to painting. His further development in the eighties and beginning of the nineties led to a rejection of the former modernist traditions (in Kokolia's case the tradition of existentialism and the conception of a work of art as self-expression of the artist). For instance he painted pictures that achieve an ornamental effect through the multiplication of a certain motif (similar to eastern ornamental structures), or symbolic pictures of calligraphically painted gateways, bridges and roads. References to the oriental tradition enabled Kokolia to crate a distanced view of the traditions of western European culture. A similar attempt runs through other cycles of Kokolia's paintings, appearing in landscapes and portraits. In these pictures too he ignores the traditional European visual relationship to reality. Kokolia's work, on the contrary, prefers a mentally-ideational approach to reality and stresses the gnoseological aspect of creation. Vladimír Kokolia is one of the most important personalities of the art of the eighties. Through his works he expresses his principles on the turbulent changes in the development of Czech art over the past ten years.
